Life on Mars? Prime spot for Martian fossils identified.

Life on Mars: A new study has identified a spot that could be a good place to search for fossilized remains of life on Mars.

A spot on Mars called Nili Fossae that is rich in clay mineral-rich rocks could be a prime spot to search for the fossilized remains of Martian life that may have existed 4 billion years ago, a new study suggests.
In the study, scientists used an instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to study clay-carbonate rocks on the Martian surface leftover from ancient red planet era known as the Noachian period.

The study does not offer actual evidence of past life; rather, it suggests a place that might have been habitable.

"We suggest that the associated hydrothermal activity would have provided sufficient energy for biological activity on early Mars at Nili Fossae," said study lead author Adrian Brown, a scientist at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) in Mountain View, Calif., in a statement.

The study's findings will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Scientists have not yet discovered proof of life on Mars, or anywhere in the universe beyond Earth, though they are getting closer to knowing where to look and how to recognize the signs of life if they are present.

Brown and his colleagues studied the hydrothermal formation of clay-carbonate rocks in the Nili Fossae region on Mars. Their results suggest that these carbonate-bearing rocks share similarities with traces of life and biological markers on early Earth – particularly in a region of Western Australia.

The Nili Fossae are valleys that have cut into the ancient crust of Mars, exposing clay minerals.

The Mars terrain in this region shares many traits with Australia's East Pilbara region, which has preserved evidence of ancient Earth life beneath the soil, they said.

"In the article, we discuss the potential of the Archean volcanic of the East Pilbara region of Western Australia as an analog for the Noachian Nili Fossae on Mars," Brown said. "They indicate that biomarkers or evidence of living organisms, if produced at Nili, could have been preserved, as they have been in the North Pole Dome region of the Pilbara craton."

The Nili Fossae region was seen as an ideal area to investigate the potential habitability of early Mars. At one point, it was in the running as one of seven candidate landing sites for NASA's upcoming Mars Science Laboratory rover mission.

Since then, NASA scientists have whittled the candidate rover landing targets to four locations on Mars known as Mawrth Vallis, Gale crater, Holden crater and Eberswalde crater.

Brown and his team of researchers used the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) instrument onboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Crism studied the ancient rocks with infrared light.

Scientists say aliens more likely to send Twitter-like messages

SCIENTISTS believe aliens have been sending us Twitter-style messages for decades in a bid to make contact - we just haven't been checking their tweets.

While the messages wouldn't necessarily be restricted to 140 characters, a study suggest, ET is more likely to send out short, directed messages than continuous signals beamed in all directions.

"This approach is more like Twitter and less like War and Peace," Dr James Benford, a physicist and president of Microwave Sciences in the US, said.

His twin brother, Gregory, an astrophysicist at the University of California, said: "Whatever the life form, evolution selects for economy of resources.

"Transmitting signals across light years would require considerable resources."

The brothers claim scientists involved in America's Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, have been taking the wrong approach for five decades.
They said alien signals would not be blasted out in all directions but narrowly directed in the one-to-10 gigahertz broadband signal range and SETI's broad sweeping search of the galactic plane could leave many days when brief Twitter-like flashes of "here we are" from alien civilisations go undetected.

Meanwhile, it's been revealed more than 100 planets of a similar size to Earth have been found in just the past few weeks.

The discovery was made by space telescope Kepler, which has been scanning the skies for planets orbiting stars since it was launched in January last year.

Scientists now think there are likely to be around 100 million planets in the Milky Way that harbour the right conditions for life.

They also expect to be able to identify around 60 of these habitable Earth-like planets within the next two years.

Scientists find most massive star ever discovered

LONDON – A huge ball of brightly burning gas drifting through a neighboring galaxy may be the heaviest star ever discovered — hundreds of times more massive than the sun, scientists said Wednesday after working out its weight for the first time.

Those behind the find say the star, called R136a1, may once have weighed as much as 320 solar masses. Astrophysicist Paul Crowther said the obese star — twice as heavy as any previously discovered — has already slimmed down considerably over its lifetime.
In fact, it's burning itself off with such intensity that it shines at nearly 10 million times the luminosity of the sun.

"Unlike humans, these stars are born heavy and lose weight as they age," said Crowther, an astrophysicist at the University of Sheffield in northern England. "R136a1 is already middle-aged and has undergone an intense weight loss program."

Crowther said the giant was identified at the center of a star cluster in the Tarantula Nebula, a sprawling cloud of gas and dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy about 165,000 light-years away from our own Milky Way.

The star was the most massive of several giants identified by Crowther and his team in an article in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

While other stars can be larger, notably the swollen crimson-colored ones known as red giants, they weigh far less.

Still, the mass of R136a1 and its ilk means they're tens of times bigger than the Earth's sun and they're brighter and hotter, too.

Surface temperatures can surpass 40,000 degrees Celsius (72,000 degrees Fahrenheit), seven times hotter than the sun. They're also several million times brighter, because the greedy giants tear through their energy reserves far faster than their smaller counterparts.
That also means that massive stars live fast and die young, quickly shedding huge amounts of material and burning themselves out in what are thought to be spectacular explosions.

"The biggest live only 3 million years," Crowther said. "In astronomy that's a very short time."

Small lifespans are one of several reasons why these obese stars are so hard to find. Another is that they're extremely rare, forming only in the densest star clusters.

Astronomers also have a limited range in which to look for them. In clusters that are too far away, it isn't always possible to tell if a telescope has picked up on one heavyweight star or two smaller ones in close proximity.

In this case, Crowther's team re-examined previously known stars to see if they could find an accurate measurement of their weight. The team reviewed archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope and gathered new readings from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope at Paranal in Chile.

Scientists who weren't involved in the find said the results were impressive, although they cautioned it was still possible, although unlikely, that scientists had confused two very close stars for a bigger, single one.

"What they're characterizing as a single massive star could in fact be a binary system too close to be resolved," said Mark Krumholz, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Both he and Phillip Massey, an astronomer with the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, also cautioned that the star's weight had been inferred using scientific models and that those were subject to change.

But both scientists said the authors had made a strong case, arguing that the solar material being thrown off from feuding stars in a binary system would produce much more powerful X-rays than have been detected.

Crowther acknowledged that R136a1 could have a partner, but he said it was likely to be a much smaller star, meaning that the star's its birth weight was still considerable — perhaps 300 solar masses instead of 320.

Space telescope spots 25,000 new asteroids

LOS ANGELES — Worried about Earth-threatening asteroids? One of NASA's newest space telescopes has spotted 25,000 never-before-seen asteroids in just six months.

Ninety-five of those are considered "near Earth," but in the language of astronomy that means within 30 million miles. Luckily for us, none poses any threat to Earth anytime soon.

Called WISE for Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the telescope completes its first full scan of the sky on Saturday and then begins another round of imaging.

What's special about WISE is its ability to see through impenetrable veils of dust, picking up the heat glow of objects that are invisible to regular telescopes.

"Most telescopes focus on the hottest and brightest objects in the universe," said Richard Binzel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "WISE is especially sensitive to seeing what's cool and dark, what you could call the stealth objects of the universe."

Mission team members are elated with the discoveries of the $320 million project, which launched in December. By the end of the year, researchers expect to have a cosmic census of millions of newfound objects that should help answer questions about how planets, stars and galaxies form.

Besides all those asteroids, WISE has also sighted 15 new comets. It has spied hundreds of potential brown dwarfs — stellar objects that are bigger than a planet but much smaller than a star — and confirmed the existence of 20 of them, including some of the coldest ever known.
The telescope also detected what's thought to be an ultraluminous galaxy, more than 10 billion light years away and formed from other colliding galaxies.

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

"We're filling in the blanks on everything in the universe from near-Earth objects to forming galaxies," said project scientist Peter Eisenhardt of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managing the mission. "There's quite a zoo."

WISE's 16-inch telescope was built by Utah State University's Space Dynamics Laboratory. It circles the Earth 300 miles high and takes snapshots every 11 seconds over the whole sky.

UFO in China's Skies Prompts Investigation

An unidentified flying object (UFO) forced Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou, China to cease operations on July 7. A flight crew preparing for descent first detected the object around 8:40 p.m. and notified the air traffic control department. Aviation authorities responded within minutes, grounding outbound flights and diverting inbound ones to airports in Ningbo and Wuxi.

Eighteen flights were affected. Though normal operations resumed an hour later, the incident captured the attention of the Chinese media and sparked a firestorm of speculation on the UFO's identity.

"It is a hidden U.S. bomber flying toward China," one Internet user wrote on Monday. Another wrote on Sunday night, "In my opinion, the UFO is neither a U.S. missile nor a Russian satellite. Suggestions that it is extraterrestrial are even more preposterous. Everyone, use your head. This is clearly a man-made phenomenon. Would the U.S. or Russia risk provoking China's anger by firing a missile or satellite rocket in Chinese skies, without warning? I believe the Chinese military is responsible for the UFO. It is a new missile or aircraft being tested out."

Fueling speculations further, Hangzhou residents released photos, taken in the afternoon before the delays, of a hovering object bathed in golden light and exhibiting a comet-like tail. Less than an hour before the Xiaoshan airport shut down, residents said they also saw a flying object emitting red and white rays of light.

Resident Ma Shijun was taking a nighttime stroll with his wife when he saw the object.

"I felt a beam of light over my head. Looking up, I saw a streak of bright, white light flying across the sky, so I picked up the camera and took the photo. The time was 8:26 p.m. However, whether the object was a plane, or whether it was Xiaoshan Airport's UFO, I don't have a clear answer," Ma told the Xinhua news agency.

The photos taken by Hangzhou residents may be unrelated to the UFO that shut down Xiaoshan Airport. According to Hangzhou meteorological authorities, residents in the afternoon probably saw light reflecting off of an airplane. As for Ma's nighttime photo, Beijing Planetarium curator Zhu Jing told Xinhua that the object looks just like a plane shining its strobe lamps.

EU MP Mario Borghezi, Bilderberger foe, introduces EU Parliament declaration to end UFO/ET secrecy

As of June 18, 2010 seventeen members of the European Union Parliament, led by Italian EU MP Mario Borghezi, have reportedly signed and tabled a “Written declaration on the declassification of documentation on UFOs” calling on member states to disclose documents relating to UFOs, and end UFO secrecy.

The full text of the EU Written Declaration (0057/2010), dated June 14, 2010, is set out in the article below.

The EU declaration states that the European Parliament “recognizes that in 1978 the 33rd General Assembly of the United Nations formally recognized UFOs as a valid issue.”

The EU declaration goes on to state that the European Parliament:

“1. Considers it essential to set up a scientific centre for the analysis and dissemination of the scientific data gathered to date by various European bodies and governments;

“2. Calls for public archives on UFOs to be opened up and for records to be declassified by the Member States, thus providing the public and the mass media with access to the full range of documentation on the subject;

“3. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, to the Council, the Commission and the governments of the Member States.

On December 18, 1978, the U.N. General Assembly adopted UNGA Decision 33/426, stating that the “General Assembly invites interested Member States to take appropriate steps to coordinate on a national level scientific research and investigation into extraterrestrial life, including unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and to inform the Secretary-General of the observations, research and evaluation of such activities.”

To date - nearly 32 years later - the U.N. General Assembly has not taken any practical steps to implement UNGA Decision 33/426.

The European MP sponsoring the resolution appears to be a committed foe of Bilderberger and Trilateralists infiltration of the European Parliament. In November 2009, EU MP Mario Borghezio questioned the nominations of Bilderberg and Trilateral attendees and cohorts for the posts of EU President and EU foreign minister. readers can view MP Mario Borghezio’s statements in the EU parliament against the Bilderberger and Trilateralist infiltration of the EU in the article below.

Written declaration on the declassification of documentation on UFOs

The European Parliament, –

having regard to Articles 4, 179, 180 and 189 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

having regard to Rule 123 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas in 1978 the 33rd General Assembly of the United Nations formally recognised UFOs as a valid issue,

B. whereas in 1993 a resolution drafted by the Italian physicist Tullio Regge and seeking to extend to European level the investigative remit of what was then the only government body looking into UFOs (the SEPRA, which has now become the GEIPAN) was tabled in Parliament,

C. whereas many members of the scientific community have been looking into the issue of UFOs and have denounced the systematic covering-up of information on the subject,

D. whereas a study of the material collected by the governments of all the Member States would have major scientific and technological spinoffs,

1. Considers it essential to set up a scientific centre for the analysis and dissemination of the scientific data gathered to date by various European bodies and governments;

2. Calls for public archives on UFOs to be opened up and for records to be declassified by the Member States, thus providing the public and the mass media with access to the full range of documentation on the subject

3. Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, to the Council, the Commission and the governments of the Member States.

EU MP Mario Borghezi and the Bilderberger anti-disclosure agenda

EU MP Mario Borghezi has worked to expose the presence of the Bilderberger and Trilateralist factions in the European Parliament. The Bilderbergers and Trilateralists are both clubs that employ policy-makers, media executives and personalities, politicians, and public office holders to implement the anti-disclosure policies adopted by an insider group of substantial asset owners, including principals in the Rothschild and Rockefeller groups, and the British and Dutch royal houses.

In this video, EU MP Mario Borghezi participates with Canadian expert Daniel Estulin on Bilderberger infiltation of global public policy.

The following is an investigative account of EU MP Mario Borghezi’s exposure of Bilderberger agent’s influence in the European Parliament.

EU MP Mario Borghezi’s actions to expose Bilderberger and Trilateralist infiltration in the European Parliament augur well for his shepherding of an honest, truth-oriented disclosure agenda in the UFO disclosure declaration.

Italian MP Denounces Bilderberg Influence During European Parliament Meeting

Kurt Nimmo, Infowars, November 14, 2009

Mario Borghezio, an Italian member of European Parliament, dropped a bomb shell at the EU this week. In the video below, during a session of the parliament in Brussels Borghezio questioned the nominations of Bilderberg and Trilateral attendees and cohorts for the posts of EU President and EU foreign minister.

“Is it possible,” Borghezio asked, “that no one has noticed that all 3 frequently attended the Bilderberg or Trilateral meetings? I believe we need to apply the principles of transparency, so often mentioned here in our institutions. We need to establish clearly whether these are the candidates of their own countries’ political forces, or whether they are simply the candidates of these occult groups that meet behind closed door to decide matters over the heads of the people.”

The candidates in question are Jan Peter Balkenende, David Miliband, and Herman Van Rompuy.

Dutch Prime Minister Balkenende attended the Bilderberg meeting held at the Westfields Marriott hotel in Chantilly, Virginia on June 5-8, 2008. As Paul Joseph Watson noted on May 22 of that year, the Dutch embassy went out of its way to hide the fact Balkenende had attended the elite confab.

Balkenende and his European Affairs Minister Frans Timmermans were formally petitioned over their involvement with Bilderberg by Dutch MP Harry van Bommel. Timmermans referred directly to research conducted by Watson and Bilderberg researcher Daniel Estulin.

“Prime Minister Balkenende attended the Bilderberg Group conference in Washington DC last year, before meeting with President Bush, along with Queen Beatrix and her son William-Alexander. Queen Beatrix is a regular attendee of the elitist confab and was photographed by our reporters arriving at Bilderberg last year,” Watson noted on May 15, 2009.

David Miliband, the current Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of Britain, is an EU operative pushing “environmental reform” and the globalist climate change agenda. In 2006, he pushed the idea of carbon trading “credit cards” for everyone. He is considered “ideal material” for the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union. Miliband went to Oxford and was a Kennedy Scholar at MIT, a scholarship with intimate ties to Anglo-American elitism. His father, Ralph Miliband, was a noted Marxist intellectual.

Herman Van Rompuy is the current Prime Minister of Belgium and a member of the King’s Crown Council. Van Rompuy also pushes the globalist “green” agenda, as Flanders Today has reported.

Van Rompuy “showed his hand” at a Bilderberg meeting when he “told the elite club that the European government leaders are increasingly becoming proponents of Europe tapping off green income,” in short fleecing the plebs under cover of the climate change ruse. “Van Rompuy accepted the invitation of Etienne Davignon to address the gathering because the discretion of the Bilderberg Group has attained legendary status, and what is said at its meetings has never leaked out,” the newspaper added.

In fact, thanks to Bilderberg sleuths Jim Tucker and Daniel Estulin, much of what the Bilderbergers have in mind for us has leaked out.

How to evaluate EU MP Mario Borghezi’s EU UFO disclosure declaration in the EU parliament

1. Political Integrity and Disclosure – Because of EU MP Mario Borghezi’s prior denunciation of Bilderberger and Trilateralist anti-disclosure factions in the European Parliament, it appears less likely that the EU disclosure declaration will be co-opted by the same anti-disclosure forces that have co-opted UFO/ET disclosure in the U.K. Ministry of Defence and in the U.S. Department of Defense. One should remember that at present, 17 of the 345 members of the EU Parliament have reported signed the UFO disclosure declaration.

2. Explicit anti-Bilderberger and anti-Trilateralist sponsor - The EU UFO disclosure declaration appears not to be controlled by anti-disclosure Bildergerger or Trilateralist forces. has reported in "UK releases past UFO reports, will destroy future UFO reports, avoids government ET/UFO “conspiracy” how both the U.K. Ministry of Defence and the U.S. Department of Defense are taking implementing an aggressive anti-disclosure policy. has reported in "UFODC-Obama adviser says documented UFO/ET landings on U.S. Capitol “could destabilize society” how Obama administration insiders are actually implementing anti-disclosure policies.

One principal reason for these Obama administration policies may be the deep infiltration into the Obama administration of anti-disclosure Bilderberger and Trilateralist principals, such as Zbigniew Brzezinski, a founder of the Trilateralists and one of Obama’s mentors since the early 1980s.

As reported in "Informal UFO/ET disclosure now happening in leaked UFO/ET reports via U.S. Capitol Police", informal UFO/ET disclosure is now taking place in the U.S. through individuals that are outside the command and control of Bilderberger and Trilateralist elite command structures. has reported in UK Deputy PM’s birthplace is UFO hotspot, but will UK ‘disclose’ the UFO/ET presence under Cameron? The likelihood that UK Prime Minister David Cameron will not engage in meaningful extraterrestrial disclosure.

One principal reason for this non-disclosure may be, as stated, David Cameron’s own background as Bilderberger participant (Cameron is believed to have attended the 2006 and 2008 Bilderberger meetings).

4. UFO/ET disclosure abdication by the U.S. – The EU UFO disclosure declaration is apt to highlight the abject abdication of UFO/ET disclosure by the Obama administration.

Less than a week after a senior U.N. official confirmed to this reported Alfred Lambremont Webre that the U.N. Secretariat would hold a meeting on extraterrestrial policy if it were requested by a U.N. member nation, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. and U.N. Ambassador Susan E. Rice’s offices will not even discuss the matter on the record. On March 18, 2009, Juan Carlos Brandt, U.N. Chief of Advocacy and Special Events stated to this reporter, “If there is one (1) U.N. member state that would ask for a meeting on extraterrestrials, it would take place.” The office of the President of the 63rd U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, the former Sandinista foreign minister of Nicaragua (1979-90), also has confirmed to this reporter that it would support any U.N. member nation calling for implementation of UNGA Decision 33/426, which calls for coordination of research on “unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial life.” On March 22, 2009, a U.S. ally, the U.K. Ministry of Defence released over 1200 previously secret files relating to UFOs and extraterrestrial life. On March 26, 2009, when reached by this reporter, neither Hillary Clinton’s nor Susan Rice’s offices nor their spokespersons would comment on the U.N. official’s statements, or on U.S. plans to support implementation of UNGA Decision 33/426.

5. The EU UFO disclosure declaration & the November 2010 Denver ET Affairs Commission ballot initiative – Two of the current initiatives that appear to have integrity and a promise of delivering public disclosure of the extraterrestrial presence are – at this time - The EU UFO disclosure declaration & the Denver ET Affairs Commission ballot initiative, which has now been moved to the November 2010 general election ballot in Denver, Colorado.

6. Disclosure & Anti-immigrant political views - EU MP Mario Borghezi's biography reveals the following criminal convictions: "On September 11, 2007, he was arrested by Belgian police for participating in protest against islamization of Europe. In 1993 he was sentenced to pay a fine of 750,000 lire for private violence on a child in relation to an incident dating back to 1991. He detained by the arm and brought to the police a 12 years old Moroccan vendor, who was living in Italy without proper VISA. In July 2005, Borghezio was found guilty of arson, for having set fire to the pallets of some immigrants while they were sleeping under a bridge in Turin during a vigilante raid. For this he was sentenced to two months and twenty days, which converted into a fine of €3,040." For this reason, some activists in the exopolitical community have stated they will not support the EU UFO disclosure declaration. Other activist organizations in the exopolitical community have welcomed, supported and publicized the EU UFO disclosure declaration.

CIA Report Confirms NSA Psychic Spy Program

An article released from the CIA's internal "Studies in Intelligence" reveals the existence of a National Security Agency paranormal program, which was previously reported based upon information provided by unnamed sources.

( -- A footnote found in an article written by Gerald K. Haines for the CIA's classified "Studies in Intelligence" confirms the existence of a rumored National Security Agency psychic research program.

Gerald K. Haines is the National Reconnaissance Office historian.

A special thank you goes to Scott Montgomery for bringing the Haines footnote to my attention.]

Previously, sources to, including one of the psychics who worked with the program following 9/11, identified the NSA as the successor to the now-declassified Defense Intelligence Agency program nick-named STAR GATE.

The STAR GATE program was made public in 1995.

The footnote is found in the declassified CIA-published article called "CIA's Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90: A Die-Hard Issue." The article is available to read at the CIA's website.

Haines writes, "CIA also maintained Intelligence Community coordination with other agencies regarding their work in parapsychology, psychic phenomena, and 'remote viewing' experiments. In general, the Agency took a conservative scientific view of these unconventional scientific issues."

He then adds in the footnote, "There is a DIA Psychic Center and the NSA studies parapsychology, that branch of psychology that deals with the investigation of such psychic phenomena as clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, and telepathy."

The footnote also mentions possible CIA involvement when extraterrestrial aliens arrive here on Earth:

"The CIA reportedly is also a member of an Incident Response Team to investigate UFO landings, if one should occur."

Curiously one of the sources, who provided information concerning the post-9/11 NSA psychic program to investigative author Gus Russo, claimed that some of the operations to remote view foreign intelligence targets had been blocked by "an unknown extraterrestrial source," suggesting the program involves more than psychic perceptions.

Following Russo's revelation of the psychic program by his NSA source, a second independent source confirmed the existence of the program. The second source also mentioned involvement of the Defense Intelligence Agency, the home of the original STAR GATE program under Obama Director of National Intelligence nominee James R. Clapper.

In 1995, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates appeared on ABC News Nightline with Ted Koppel, to represent CIA's involvement in the psychic spy program.

The CIA article appears to confirm the alleged post-9/11 NSA program has its roots in earlier efforts. A review of numerous STAR GATE documents indicate NSA interest in paranormal phenomena, going back to the 1970s. Curiously, NSA appears to be redacted from later documents, suggesting the need to disassociate the agency from the STAR GATE program. One improperly marked redaction clearly reveals the letters "NSA" under the blacked out section of the document.

A review of STAR GATE documents from the 1980s uncovered warnings that aircraft would be used as weapons of mass destruction against targets in New York City and Washington, D.C.

One 1983 memo, which appears to have been generated as the result of special training of military psychics at the Monroe Institute, identifies a man from the Mideast with a name that sounds like "Jerry, Gerard, or Geraldo," who would pilot an aircraft into the US Capitol Building.

Terrorist Ziad Jarrah was identified as the pilot of Flight 93, the only hijacked aircraft that failed to reach its intended target during the 9/11 attacks. It is widely accepted that Flight 93 was targeted to take out either the US Capitol or the White House.

A 1986 STAR GATE document identified the White House as another target of concern and noted the air attack would take place simultaneously in Washington D.C. and New York City. One of the US military psychics reported a ceremony at the White House to honor those who lost their lives stopping the air attack. Flight 93 crashed into a field following an attempt by the heroic passengers to retake the cockpit from the terrorists.

According to one of the NSA sources, who is a British citizen, the US government psychic effort increased following warnings of the impending 9/11 attack provided by a psychic to the London CIA office days before September 11, 2001.

Some sources have also mentioned the use of psychics in the quest to locate Saddam Hussein's hideout in Iraq.

Gus Russo's NSA source told him that psychic remote viewing was considered a legitimate form of signals intelligence -- suggesting the possible discovery of a transmission medium. The search for a transmission medium for the human mind -- analogous to radio waves for modern electronics -- was a primary goal of the DIA STAR GATE program and had been tentatively identified by Russian researchers as "spin fields" or propagating space-time "torsion fields" connecting isolated minds across both space and time.

According to CIA author Haines, "In late 1993, after being pressured by UFOlogists for the release of additional CIA information on UFOs, DCI R. James Woolsey ordered another review of all Agency files on UFOs."

In another footnote, Haines explains, "In September 1993 John Petersen [misspelled as 'Peterson' in the original], an acquaintance of Woolsey's, first approached the DCI with a package of heavily sanitized CIA material on UFOs released to UFOlogist Stanton T. Friedman. Peterson and Friedman wanted to know the reasons for the redactions. Woolsey agreed to look into the matter."

One STAR GATE document identifies Mr. Petersen as the person who instigated interest in STAR GATE psychic spy activities by senior members of the Department of Defense.

Within a year of Woolsey's request for UFO information, a Congressional mandate was issued to transfer control of the DIA psychic programs to the CIA, where they were eventually declassified. A previous Congressional request included the requirement of cooperating with former Soviet scientists on paranormal related research, something the DIA apparently resisted.

A few years after declassification, the former Director of Central Intelligence Woolsey was associated with futurist John L. Petersen's The Arlington Institute, as were several others including entrepreneur Joe Firmage, who was funding the kind of collaborative paranormal research previously requested by Congress.

One of the key researchers involved with the DIA STAR GATE program, Dr. Ed May, who had appeared with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and a CIA officer called "Norm" on the 1995 ABC News Nightline program, lost his Russian associate in a tragic accident in 2001.

Larissa Vilenskaya, who had accompanied May to Russia to introduce him to former Soviet researchers during the covert DIA STAR GATE effort, was killed when she walked in front of an on-coming train. According to an email provided by May, "This tragic accident happened because one train had entered the Menlo Park station and Larissa, not knowing another North bound train was on the other track, attempted to cross."

Local authorities confirmed May's account of the story.

Several sources have mentioned discussions at Petersen's Arlington Institute concerning public disclosure of a covert extraterrestrial presence.

According to Catherine Austin Fitts, a former Assistant Secretary of Housing, the problem of the extraterrestrials living among us was discussed at The Arlington Institute.

Fitts claims that those present for the extraterrestrial discussions included Joe Firmage, the Undersecretary of the Navy, former Director of Central Intelligence James R. Woolsey, and several military, ex-military and government officials.

In September 2000, I received an email from Dr. Ron Pandolfi, a CIA analyst who had recently testified in front of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about unauthorized technology transfers to China. Among the recipients of the email were Joe Firmage, and several scientists involved in Firmage's research activities, as well as other individuals known for their psychic abilities, including mentalist showman Uri Geller.

In a taped phone conversation with a foreign national who identified himself as "Dr. Victorian," Pandolfi claims to have been a member of a DIA sponsored UFO Working Group.

A few years later, author Jon Ronson, the author of the book The Men Who Stare at Goats, identified "Ron" as the man behind a new US psychic spy effort, based upon the testimony of Uri Geller, less than a month after 9/11.

Open source documents appear to connect Dr. Pandolfi to the CIA's National Intelligence Council, the group tasked to produce National Intelligence Estimates for senior government officials, including the US President.

Following the creation of the Director of National Intelligence, both the National Intelligence Council and Pandolfi moved to the Office of the DNI, based upon government documents. Although Pandolfi has been identified by Jon Ronson with the psychic spies, other sources claim Pandolfi was involved in the shut down of DIA's STAR GATE program in the 1990s.

Pandolfi's specialty, Measurement and Signature Intelligence, is potentially related to the above mentioned Signals Intelligence at NSA. The obvious connection would be to collect the measurement and signatures of brain activities of individuals said to be in psychic contact, assuming an unknown signal medium.

Based upon the admittedly limited information, the NSA program is probably independent of previous programs and personnel.

Russian Cargo Ship Veers Out of Control Near Space Station

An unmanned Russian cargo ship veered out of control near the International Space Station on Friday, sailing clear past the orbiting lab instead of docking on autopilot, as engineers on Earth struggle to determine what went wrong.

The robotic cargo ship Progress 38 was slated to dock at the space station at 12:58 p.m. EDT (1658 GMT) but lost its navigational lock on the orbiting lab about 28 minutes before the rendezvous.

"The Progress literally flew past the station, but at a safe distance from the outpost," NASA commentator Rob Navias said. "The station crew reported seeing the Progress drift beyond their view, as they worked to reestablish telemetry with the spacecraft."

The six people living aboard the space station – three Americans and three Russians – were never in any danger, NASA officials said.

The Progress 38 spacecraft flew by the space station at a distance of nearly 2 miles (3 km) away, posing no threat of impact. But because of its orbit, there was no second chance to dock the spacecraft by remote control today.

"It's been officially decided that there will be no docking today," Russian flight controllers radioed the station crew.

Flight controllers at Russia's Mission Control team in Moscow are working to determine when a second attempt to dock the spacecraft may occur. Because of orbital mechanics, it may be possible to try another docking attempt in 48 hours, but that still remains to be determined, Navias said.

The aborted docking attempt is the second malfunction in a row for Russia's usually reliable Progress cargo ships.

On May 1, cosmonauts on the space station had to take remote control of the Progress 37 cargo ship when it experienced a space navigation system glitch during its own docking attempt.

Russia's robot space freighters

Russia's automated Progress cargo ships have a long track record of delivering supplies to the International Space Station. They rely on a radio beacon system called Kurs that is designed to allow the spacecraft to dock itself at the space station.

Cosmonauts on the space station can also take remote control of incoming Progress spacecraft using a console inside the station's Russian segment. Space station commander Alexander Skvortsov was getting that remote control console – called the Telerobotically Operated Rendezvous Unit (TORU) – ready when the Progress 38 vehicle veered off course.

"I don't think there was any impact to Progress," a Russian flight controller told Skvortsov in a discussion over whether the TORU system may have inadvertently sent a corrupt command to the cargo ship, aborting the rendezvous.

Navias said that once the Progress 38 spacecraft's navigation system went offline, the cargo ship automatically aborted its docking attempt as it is designed to.

Space station supplies

Known in Russia as Progress M-06M, the new Progress 38 spacecraft is packed with nearly 2.5 tons of fresh food, clothes, equipment and other supplies for the space station's six-person crew. It launched Wednesday from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Packed aboard the spacecraft are 1,918 pounds (nearly 870 kg) of propellant for the station, 110 pounds (nearly 50 kg) of oxygen, 220 pounds (99 kg) of water and 2,667 (1,209 kg) pounds of dry cargo – which includes spare parts, science equipment and other supplies.

Navias said those supplies are not critical for the space station's crew. Another Progress spacecraft is due to launch toward the space station in early September.

Russia's disposable Progress spacecraft are similar in appearance to the three-module Soyuz space taxis that ferry crews to and from the space station.

Both vehicles have a propulsion and orbital module, however Progress vehicles do not have a crew-carrying module like the Soyuz ships. Instead, Progress vehicles are equipped with a propellant module to store fuel for the space station's maneuvering thrusters.

The Downside to the Recovery of the Ozone Hole

While the hole in the Earth's protective ozone layer is slowly healing, its recovery might have a downside, scientists say: Climate change could change wind patterns and send ozone from high in the atmosphere down to the surface, where it is a major component of smog.

The discovery of a hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica was announced by a team of British scientists in 1985. The cause of the hole was attributed to ozone-depleting chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were primarily used in cooling units and propellants. When CFCs reach the ozone layer, they release chlorine atoms that rip ozone apart and peel away layers of Earth's natural sunscreen.

Simulations of life without the ozone layer, which is located in the Earth's stratosphere, are not pretty. The stratosphere (the second layer of the Earth's atmosphere, just above the one in which we dwell, the troposphere) contains 90 percent of the Earth's ozone at altitudes between 6 and 31 miles (9.6 and 50 kilometers) above us, where it traps most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays before they can reach the Earth's surface.

Without this shield, we'd be sunburned within 5 minutes of exposure, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

The Antarctic ozone hole is the closest real-life glimpse at a world without UV protection. Since its discovery in the 1980s, it has spread over parts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa where the threats of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to have raised concerns.

Major efforts have been initiated to speed up the ozone hole's recovery, including the 1987 Montreal Protocol and the phasing out of CFCs. Even so, a study by Guang Zeng and her colleagues from New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research shows that that the recovery, in concert with climate change, may do harm as well as good.

The study, detailed in the May edition of Geophysical Research Letters, revealed that variations in atmospheric circulation due to climate change will cause a 43-percent increase in gas exchange between the stratosphere and the troposphere, the layer of Earth's air at the surface and our air supply. As more and more ozone is replenished in the stratosphere it will also have more opportunities to seep into the air we breathe.

Some ozone is currently present in the troposphere, though mostly as smog from car emissions and other pollutants. It can be harmful to human respiratory systems and the environment.

If carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere increase as expected from unabated emission, Zeng said the ozone layer will cool off, blurring the temperature boundary that separates it from the troposphere. Within the next century, more ozone than ever before will surge into our air, her computer model study predicts.

Zeng hopes that future studies of the impacts of climate change will account for the atmospheric composition of both the stratosphere and troposphere, as well as the movement of ozone between the two, to paint a better, more accurate picture of the Earth's environmental future.

Attack of the Sun

Massive solar eruptions could threaten our high-tech society.

The year was 2003... with Halloween approaching...

93 million miles away... an angry sun began to vent its rage.

Dark regions, called sunspots, appeared unexpectedly on its surface... a sign of rising tension within.

It had been three and a half years since the sun last erupted in fury... the peak of an 11-year cycle of solar flare-ups.

Back then, we got ready for it... by shutting down satellites that were vulnerable to high levels of radiation.

But no one expected this.

In what should have been a low point in solar activity, the sun erupted in a series of massive explosions, called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs.

Electrified gas clouds weighing billions of tons raced outward.

Solar telescopes recorded the action...

The largest emission of solar x-rays ever seen.

The hottest flares, at tens of millions of degrees...

And the fastest... reaching speeds clocked at six million miles per hour.

The sun became a giant plasma weapon... more potent than any in science fiction... and pointed right at our home planet.

On Earth... the Halloween storms produced some of the most spectacular auroras ever seen at the north and south poles.

They also brought jolts of electricity that caused power outages in Sweden, and disrupted airline navigation.

In space, these storms damaged 28 communications satellites, and destroyed two. And they didn't stop there.

As the energetic surge swept past Mars, it was so strong it burned out the radiation monitor aboard the spacecraft, Mars Global Surveyor. Ironically, this instrument was designed to study radiation that human explorers might encounter on future missions beyond Earth.

Months later, the rush of solar energy washed over the two Voyager spacecraft, on their way to the far reaches of the solar system.

CMEs like these have been known to blast their way out the far edges of the solar system, where the solar wind meets the flow of gas around the galaxy itself.

This stormy season on the sun lasted about five weeks. It was by no means the worst.

A solar eruption in 1859 was so powerful it set fire to telegraph offices... several people got nasty electric shocks, simply because they were working with metal objects... and for the next few nights, auroras were reportedly bright enough to read by.

A similar storm today could easily cause more than two trillion dollars in damage to our high-tech infrastructure, twenty times greater than hurricane Katrina.

But believe it or not, the threat is about to get even worse.

We are beginning to change the way we acquire and use energy... by expanding our power grid to accommodate wind arrays... new nuclear plants ... and other renewable energy sources.

This grid will get larger... and smarter.... With microprocessors in most every device...communicating and negotiating with one another... running everything from air conditioners to power plants.

A sudden surge of solar activity could strike the grid directly...inflicting a substantial amount of damage on the emerging smart power economy.

To understand what a powerful force the sun can be...

Take a look at Venus. At almost exactly the same size and mass as Earth, it's truly our sister planet.

The thinking is that long ago, fierce solar winds stripped off lighter water molecules from its upper atmosphere. What was left was a witches' brew of acidic gases and carbon dioxide that thickened at lower altitudes, rising to some 90 times the density of Earth's atmosphere.

At a concentration of 95% in Venus' atmosphere, CO2 gas trapped increasing amounts of sunlight and drove surface temperatures close to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

How did Earth avoid such a harsh fate?

One of the main reasons is that our planet has what Venus lacks... a natural defense against solar attacks.

The First Photo of a Planet Outside Our Solar System

This isn't our Sun. This other sun is 470 light-years away from our home. Its name is 1RXS J160929.1-210524, and the orange sphere near it has been confirmed today as an orbiting planet. The first photo of an extra-solar planet.

The photo was originally taken in 2008 by David Lafreniere and collaborators working at the Gemini Observatory. Scientists weren't sure about it being an orbiting planet until now, however. New observations have shown that the planet follows an orbit around the star 300 times larger than Earth's orbit.

The planet has eight times the mass of Jupiter, and has a much higher temperature: 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit as opposed to the minus 166 degrees of the biggest planet in our solar system. Scientists believe this temperature is a product of the age of this star system, much younger than ours.

Far from throwing any light in planetary theories, this discovery challenges the current model. Lafreniere and his colleagues think the orbit is too large for the planet to form by core accretion. If that was the case, then the star system could be much older than is actual age.

Or maybe... maybe that's not a planet. Cue in the suspense music.

No sex please, we're astronauts: NASA commander

TOKYO — There is no room for romance on board the cosy confines of the International Space Station, a NASA space shuttle commander said Monday when asked what would happen if astronauts had sex in space.

"We are a group of professionals," said Space Shuttle Discovery commander Alan Poindexter during a visit to Tokyo, after a reporter asked about the consequences if astronauts boldly went where probably no others have been.

"We treat each other with respect and we have a great working relationship. Personal relationships are not ... an issue," said a serious-faced Poindexter. "We don't have them and we won't."

Poindexter and his six crew members, including the first Japanese mother in space Naoko Yamazaki, were in Tokyo to talk about their two-week resupply mission to the International Space Station.

The April voyage broke new ground by putting four women in orbit for the first time, with three female crew joining one woman already on the station.

Sex in space may appear out of bounds, but astronauts have been known to succumb to earthly passions.
In 2007 former NASA astronaut Lisa Marie Nowak allegedly wore adult diapers when driving hundreds of miles across the United States without bathroom breaks to confront a suspected rival in a romance with a fellow astronaut.
